Over 450 bands nationwide entered the contest by submitting YouTube videos of their performances of Metallica songs. The winners, chosen by Metallica themselves, will be announced in January 2024 and will receive musical instruments and equipment for their school programs. The contest also includes fan favorite categories, with online voting determining two additional winners.

The parade will start at Fifth Avenue and 44th Street and will include elected officials and a variety of bands and other groups. Spectators can watch along Fifth Avenue from 48th Street to 55th Street.
