PSG Wins Battle Over Manuel Ugarte, Beating Out Chelsea.
Paris Saint-Germain is set to sign Manuel Ugarte from Sporting Lisbon after triggering his €60m release clause, but Chelsea also competed fiercely for the Uruguayan midfielder's signature. PSG drafted a legal letter expressing concern that Sporting may have agreed to transfer Ugarte to Chelsea and inquired about the possibility of a minority stake in Sporting by Chelsea. Chelsea withdrew from the race, citing PSG's offer beyond the market rate for the player. PSG's letter also outlined concerns over the "integrity" of the proposed transfer to Chelsea, pointing to UEFA regulations prohibiting clubs from holding shares in or having management control of another side taking part in any of its three competitions.
