Advancements in AI-Backed Mammography Boost Breast Cancer Detection by 20%
A new study published in The Lancet Oncology found that artificial intelligence (AI) can increase breast cancer detection by 20% and reduce radiologists' workload by 44% when used in mammogram screening. The study, which is the first randomized control trial of its kind, compared AI-assisted breast cancer detection with detection done by well-trained humans alone. The AI-supported screenings resulted in a higher cancer detection rate without increasing false positives. If further research confirms these findings, AI could help alleviate the shortage of radiologists and improve the accuracy of breast cancer detection.
