FTC Cracks Down on Data Brokers for Selling Sensitive Location Info

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is taking action against Gravy Analytics and its subsidiary Venntel for unlawfully selling sensitive location data, including visits to health-related sites and places of worship, without user consent. The proposed settlement prohibits the companies from selling or using such data and mandates the establishment of a sensitive data location program. The FTC's complaint highlights the risks of privacy harms and discrimination from unauthorized data disclosure. This marks the FTC's fifth action against data aggregators for mishandling sensitive location data.

"Enhancing User Control: Google Maps' New Location Data Features"

Google Maps has introduced new features to enhance user control over location data. Users can now utilize the Timeline feature to remember places they've visited, which is helpful for recollection but requires Location History to be turned on. Google also offers an auto-delete function, allowing users to set a timeframe for automatic deletion of their location history. Additionally, users can delete their entire location history, specific time ranges, single days, or individual places. The updates also include the ability to delete directions, searches, and shares, and the blue location dot now provides immediate access to key location settings. These updates aim to give users more power and ease in managing their location data while using Google Maps.
