Netflix Restructures Film Units to Prioritize Quality Over Quantity.
Lisa Nishimura, VP of independent film and documentary features at Netflix, is leaving the company after a 16-year stint. Nishimura was instrumental in building Netflix into a dominant force in documentary and became one of Netflix’s most visible executives. Her departure has come as a shock to the nonfiction film community. Nishimura oversaw Netflix's first Oscar nomination and win for a documentary feature and helped the platform become a major player in the space. Her sudden exit compounds anxiety in the documentary community about the shrinking range of content that interests streaming platforms and other distributors.
