A Hong Kong court sentenced 12 people to jail terms ranging from over four years to nearly seven years for their involvement in the storming of the city's legislature during a pro-democracy protest in 2019. The incident, which saw protesters break into the legislative council building, was described by the judge as a serious blow to the city's rule of law. Among those sentenced were actor Gregory Wong, political activists Ventus Lau and Owen Chow, and former president of the University of Hong Kong's student union, Althea Suen. The judge detailed the protesters' actions, and more than 10,200 people were arrested in relation to the 2019 protests, with over 870 charged with rioting.

A Hong Kong court sentenced 12 people to prison for storming the city's legislative council building during the 2019 anti-government protests. The defendants, including former student leader Althea Suen and actor Gregory Wong, received jail terms ranging from 4 1/2 years to 6 years and 10 months. Some supporters of the defendants cried in the courtroom after the sentences were handed down. Two reporters were also involved in the case, with one fined 1,500 Hong Kong dollars and the other 1,000 Hong Kong dollars for unlawful entry into the legislature.
