US Navy denies Purple Heart to 100-year-old veteran and Gold Medal recipient
Lee Vernon Newby Jr., one of the first Black Marines and a 100-year-old veteran, has been denied the honor of a Purple Heart by the US Navy. Newby is also a recipient of the Congressional Gold Medal. The Navy's decision has been met with disappointment by Newby and his family.
