The mother of Mika Wheeler Clabo, who drowned in the Tennessee River in 2022, has filed a lawsuit claiming that Knoxville Police refused to make a rescue attempt and prevented private rescuers from helping, resulting in Clabo's death. The lawsuit alleges that the officers deprived Clabo of his due process rights and were negligent in their response. The City of Knoxville and KPD Chief Paul Noel are also named as defendants for failing to train officers in handling life-threatening emergencies. KPD has denied the allegations and stated that the officers responded appropriately.
A student at West High School in Knoxville, Tennessee, was charged with reckless endangerment, reckless aggravated assault, and possession of a weapon on school grounds after a gun inside their backpack discharged in a classroom, grazing a teacher. The teacher's injuries were minor, and no serious injuries were reported. The school dismissed early while police investigated, and the student is in custody with the gun accounted for. Knoxville Mayor Indya Kincannon stated that guns have no place in schools, and KCS Board of Education policy forbids firearms on school property.
Knoxville Police are searching for a suspect who shot at two people in the Old City area in a domestic-related incident. The suspect fled in a car and is currently not believed to be in the area. No one was injured in the shooting.
