A bipartisan group of U.S. senators is pushing to label Russia a state sponsor of terrorism over the kidnapping of Ukrainian children, amid renewed calls for strong sanctions following recent Russian airspace violations and aggression in Ukraine.
Over two dozen Ukrainian children who had been kidnapped and taken to Russia since Moscow invaded Ukraine have now been brought back home, thanks to the efforts of the charity Save Ukraine. This was the fifth operation of its kind, and the children will now be reunited with their families. The ICC has issued arrest warrants for Russian President Vladimir Putin and Commissioner for Children’s Rights Maria Lvova-Belova, charging them with war crimes that include illegally deporting children from Ukraine to Russia since the invasion began in February 2022. More than 19,000 children have been forcibly taken to Russia, but only 360 have returned.
