Uncertainty Surrounds Churchill Downs Horse Deaths.

The first mortality reviews of 12 horses that have died in recent weeks at Churchill Downs have returned with no evidence of improper medications or other health issues that could be directly linked to their deaths. The reviews are for just two of the dozen equine fatalities at Churchill since April 27, and are posted publicly by the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission. More mortality reviews are expected as they are completed.

Emergency summit called after 12 horse deaths at Churchill Downs prompts national investigation.

Horse racing regulatory and safety officials, along with Churchill Downs representatives, will hold an emergency veterinary summit on Tuesday to review information related to the deaths of 12 horses at the Kentucky Derby track since March 30. The Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority is conducting a thorough and independent investigation into each horse death and dispatching experts to analyze Churchill Downs' racing and training surfaces. Churchill Downs CEO Bill Carstanjen said the track respects the authority of HISA and their investigatory process and will cooperate with any measures to ensure the safest racing environment possible.

KHRC Implements Mandatory 14-Day Vet's List for Horses.

Forte, who was scratched from the Kentucky Derby due to unsoundness, will not be eligible to run in the Preakness Stakes as he has been placed on a mandatory 14-day veterinary list by the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission. Trainer Todd Pletcher had previously indicated that Forte would work later this week and, if all went well, would head to the Preakness. However, Forte must first satisfy the requirements for removal from the list, including a satisfactory workout performed for a state regulatory veterinarian and a negative blood sample result.
