Kamui Kobayashi secured pole position for the 6 Hours of Monza in a tight qualifying session, narrowly beating Antonio Fuoco of Ferrari AF Corse. The top seven Hypercars qualified within half a second, with Kobayashi's Toyota GR010 Hybrid setting a time of 1:35.358. Robert Kubica took his first career WEC pole in LMP2, while Sarah Bovy claimed her second pole of the season in GTE-Am.
Toyota Gazoo Racing dominates the second Free Practice session for the 6 Hours of Monza, with Kamui Kobayashi setting the fastest lap time in the No. 7 Toyota GR010 Hybrid. Kobayashi's teammate, Brendon Hartley, finished third, while Ferrari's Antonio Fuoco took second place. The top four entries in the Hypercar class were separated by just four-tenths of a second. Porsche customer teams performed well in the GTE-Am class, with Iron Lynx's Alessio Picariello leading the way.
Kamui Kobayashi, part of the 2021 winning effort at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, will make his NASCAR debut on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course with Toyota in August driving for 23XI Racing, the team owned by Denny Hamlin and Michael Jordan. Kobayashi will be only the second Japanese driver to race in NASCAR’s top Cup Series and only the fifth to race in one of NASCAR’s top three national series. He will be the first Japanese driver to race in the Cup Series in a Toyota, which entered NASCAR’s top series in 2007.
Toyota Gazoo Racing driver and team principal Kamui Kobayashi will make his NASCAR Cup Series debut at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on August 13th, driving a No. 67 Toyota Camry for 23XI Racing. It will be the first time in 20 years that a Japanese national will start a NASCAR Cup Series race. Kobayashi is a two-time Rolex 24 At Daytona winner and the 2021 Le Mans overall winner.
