Director Jon M. Chu has shared the first look of the upcoming two-part "Wicked" movies on Instagram, featuring Ariana Grande as Glinda and Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba. The films are an adaptation of the hit Broadway musical and will tell the story leading up to Dorothy's arrival in Oz. The first movie is set to release on Nov. 27, 2024, with the second installment following on Dec. 25, 2025. Chu split the story into two movies to give a "bigger canvas" to tell the story as it was meant to be told.

The Wicked film is an adaptation of the 2003 Broadway musical, which is based on the 1995 Gregory Maguire novel Wicked: The Life and Time of the Wicked Witch of the West, and that is a prequel of sorts for L. Frank Baum's 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and the 1939 film from Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Wicked will actually become two films, and the first movie is set to be released in theaters on July 27, 2024.
