'The Girl From Ipanema' singer Astrud Gilberto dies at 83, leaving behind a bossa nova legacy.
Brazilian singer Astrud Gilberto, known for her impromptu cameo on "The Girl From Ipanema," has died at the age of 83. Her breathy tones and gentle phrasing defined the whisper-smooth mellowness of the bossa nova sound in the 1960s. Gilberto released more than 15 albums and compilations over four decades, but her initial payment for "The Girl From Ipanema" was just $120. She received no credit on the initial release of the "Getz/Gilberto" album, leaving her out of the loop for royalties on the LP.
