Arcangelo and Jena Antonucci make history with 2023 Belmont Stakes win.
Arcangelo, a gray colt, won the Belmont Stakes, making Jena Antonucci the first female trainer to win the race in its 155-year history. Meanwhile, recent horse deaths have reignited scrutiny over the horse racing industry's safety practices. Industry leaders insist the sport is safer than ever, but the Humane Society has called for reform to prioritize horse safety and well-being. Outside of Belmont Park, a group of people gathered to rally against the "cruelty and death" of horse-racing as part of a protest organized by nonprofit animal rights organization NYCLASS.
