Rwandan Genocide Fugitive Fulgence Kayishema Arrested in South Africa After 20 Years

Fulgence Kayishema, a fugitive accused of orchestrating the killing of thousands of people during the Rwandan genocide in 1994, has been arrested in South Africa after more than two decades on the run. He was taken into custody in a joint operation by the United Nations' International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals and South African authorities. Kayishema is accused of directly participating in the planning and execution of the attacks on the Tutsi population in Kivumu and the ensuing massacre at the church.

Rwandan Genocide Suspect Arrested in South Africa After Decades on the Run

Fulgence Kayishema, the most wanted fugitive accused of involvement in the Rwandan genocide of 1994, has been arrested in South Africa after decades on the run. He allegedly orchestrated the killing of more than 2,000 Tutsi refugees at Nyange Catholic Church during the genocide. Kayishema has been a fugitive since 2001 and is due to be arraigned on Friday in a Cape Town court. The International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals chief prosecutor lauded the cooperation and support of the South African government.
