NFL Owners Approve Detroit Lions' Proposal for Third Challenge Rule

The NFL has adopted a rule change proposed by the Detroit Lions for the 2024 season, altering the challenge system for instant replay. Under the new rule, a coach only needs one successful challenge to earn a third challenge opportunity, regardless of any subsequent unsuccessful challenges. The proposal "barely" passed, with just three rule changes adopted at the 2024 NFL owners meetings so far, including the Lions' proposal and the official prohibition of the "hip drop" tackle.

NCAA implements clock rule change after first downs in college football.

The NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel has approved a rule change for 2023 that will allow the clock to run after first downs in all divisions except Division III. The clock will continue to stop during the final two minutes of each half. The NCAA also approved two other rules proposed in February that will modestly impact the time of the game. Teams will now be prohibited from calling consecutive team timeouts, and penalties at the end of the first and third quarter will carry over and be enforced on the first play of the next quarter.

Yankees' Aaron Boone ejected twice in one game due to controversial calls and confusion.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone was ejected from Wednesday's game against the Cleveland Guardians after arguing that the Guardians took too long to challenge an outfield catch. The umpires eventually allowed the challenge, and the call was overturned, resulting in no outs being recorded. The Yankees went on to win the game 4-3, and have won their first four series of the season for only the fifth time in franchise history.

NFL approves No. 0 jersey number for players.

NFL owners have voted in favor of allowing all players except offensive and defensive linemen to wear the jersey number 0. The proposal was submitted by the Philadelphia Eagles and also allows kickers and punters to use any jersey numeral between 0-49 and 90-99. The league also voted to establish one preseason roster reduction date at the end of the preseason, expand instant replay to allow for review on failed fourth-down attempts, and make the penalty for tripping a personal foul. Notable rule proposals that didn't pass included allowing teams to designate a third quarterback on game days and giving teams a chance to convert fourth-and-20 from their own 20-yard line as an equivalent to an onside kick attempt.
