"Defense Department Invests Millions in Microelectronics Research and Tech Hubs"
The Defense Department has awarded nearly $240 million to eight regional "innovation hubs" in the United States as part of the Microelectronics Commons initiative. These hubs aim to bridge the gap between research and production in microelectronics, boosting the domestic manufacturing industry. The hubs will focus on areas such as electromagnetic warfare, secure computing, artificial intelligence hardware, 5G and 6G wireless, and quantum technology. The Microelectronics Commons aims to increase the production of microelectronics in the U.S., which currently accounts for only 12% globally, and ensure American technology stays within the country.
