Tragic Eruption Claims Lives of 11 Hikers on Mount Merapi
Eleven hikers have been found dead and three alive after the eruption of Mount Marapi volcano in West Sumatra, Indonesia. At least 12 climbers are still missing, with the number potentially rising to 22. The rescue efforts have been hindered by sporadic eruptions, but search operations are ongoing. Forty-nine climbers have been evacuated, and many are being treated for burns. The volcano erupted with ash plumes, stranding and injuring climbers and spreading volcanic ash over nearby villages. Mount Marapi is one of over 120 active volcanoes in Indonesia, located on the Pacific "Ring of Fire."
