Taiwan's Indigenous Hai Kun Completes First Submerged Trial
Taiwan’s indigenous defense submarine Hai Kun (SS-711), also known as Narwhal, completed its first submerged sea trials on January 29, 2026, following preparatory tests of sonar, propulsion, and underwater logging systems. Leading up to the dive, shipbuilder CSBC published explanatory materials explaining submarine propulsion differences and defended progress after missed delivery deadlines, noting the overall IDS program remains on track. Unveiled in 2023 and launched in 2024, the IDS aims to bolster Taiwan’s submarine fleet, which currently includes four boats (two Dutch-built Hai Lung and Hai Hu, and two older US-era subs). Dozens of enthusiasts gathered at Kaohsiung Harbor to show support as a potentially year-long trial program continues.
