'Elemental': A Vibrant but Flawed Pixar Rom-Com.
"Elemental" is a cute but problematic rom-com from Pixar, set in a fictional metropolis called Element City, where anthropomorphized characters representing three of the four elements as defined by the ancient Greeks live. The movie is a metaphorically loosey-goosey fairy tale about tolerance, cultural pride, and assimilation, set in a stick-to-your-own-kind world that makes the relationship between the star-crossed lovers in "West Side Story" look like a walk in the park. The film is kind of clever and topical, but also problematic.
