iLeakage Attack: Safeguarding Your Emails and Passwords on Apple Devices

Researchers have developed a new speculative side-channel attack called iLeakage that can extract sensitive information from the Safari web browser on recent Apple devices. This attack bypasses standard side-channel protections implemented by browser vendors and can steal data from Safari, Firefox, Tor, and Edge on iOS. The researchers were able to defeat side-channel protections and bypass site isolation policies in Safari, allowing them to leak sensitive data such as passwords and emails. The attack impacts Apple devices powered by Apple's A-series and M-series ARM processors. Apple has developed mitigations for macOS, but the attack highlights the potential risks of speculative execution in emerging ARM-based platforms.

"iOS and macOS Browsers Vulnerable to Password Theft and More by Hackers"

Researchers have discovered a side channel vulnerability in the A- and M-series CPUs running modern iOS and macOS devices, which allows hackers to exploit Apple's Safari browser and gain access to passwords, Gmail message content, and other sensitive information. The attack, known as iLeakage, requires extensive reverse-engineering of Apple hardware and expertise in exploiting side channels. It works by using JavaScript on a malicious website to open a separate website and extract secret information from the target device. While iLeakage currently affects Safari on Macs and all browsers on iPhones and iPads, Apple is aware of the vulnerability and plans to address it in a future software release.
