NHS approves artificial pancreas for 150,000 with diabetes
The NHS will provide over 150,000 individuals with type 1 diabetes with hybrid closed loop systems, also known as artificial pancreas devices, which consist of a sensor to measure blood sugar levels and a body-worn insulin pump. The devices calculate the required insulin amount based on the sensor data and deliver it to the body. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (Nice) recommends these devices for individuals in England and Wales whose diabetes is not adequately controlled by their current pump or glucose monitor, as they have been shown to improve blood sugar control and reduce the risk of complications.
