The Subtle Studio Ghibli Reference in the Stunning Coming-of-Age Anime 'Suzume'.
Director Makoto Shinkai intentionally included nods to Studio Ghibli in his latest film, Suzume, to root the story closer to reality before revealing its ties to the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami. The best Ghibli reference is a subtle one, where the protagonist enters a magical doorway to save a friend and finds herself in a meadow reminiscent of Howl's Moving Castle. However, instead of a romantic connection, Suzume's growth is the focus, and she saves herself by looking back at her past and telling her younger self that everything will be okay.
