Cannes Film Festival Highlights: 'Jeanne Du Barry' Review and Celeb Sightings.

"Jeanne du Barry" is a sensitive and surprisingly low-key portrait of the French monarch's last mistress, played by director Maïwenn. The film offers a relatively provocative take on all things royal, though it's super tame compared with Canal+'s tawdry "Versailles" series or Albert Serra's recent "Liberté." Johnny Depp plays the French king, but his performance is adequate but not especially engaged. The film risks turning a would-be scandal into a royal bore.

"Uncovering the Untold Story of a Trailblazing Black French Maestro in 'Chevalier' Biopic"

"Chevalier," a historical biopic directed by Stephen Williams, tells the story of Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges, a Black musical genius who was intentionally erased from history books. Set in 18th century France, the film reconstructs Bologne's life and accomplishments, including his dazzling musical duel with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and his affair with Marie-Josephine de Montalembert. Despite the risk of being disowned by the gentry, Bologne's excellence serves as a shield and weapon until it doesn't. The film ends with a triumphant final scene that celebrates the power of art and artists in times of revolution.
