Bay Area Highway 37: Toll Approved and Weekend Closure Expected
Highway 37, a congested 21-mile commuter route in the Bay Area, will become a toll road in 2027 to help pay for a $430 million project to widen the flood-prone highway. Tolls will be collected electronically in both directions at half the rate of the region's state-owned bridges. The project will expand the traffic-choked segment to four lanes, reducing commute times from 100 to 26 minutes during eastbound evening commutes and 60 to 30 minutes on westbound morning commutes. Lower-income drivers will receive discounts, and bus transit will be established on the corridor.
