Otis Taylor, a renowned blues musician, was denied his high school diploma in 1966 for refusing to cut his afro. He finally received his diploma in May 2023 in a ceremony held by the Denver public school district. Taylor believes that the haircut rule was part of a larger crackdown on rebellious students. Despite achieving his goal of becoming a professional musician, Taylor says that he never felt like his father forgave him for not receiving his diploma. He advises young people to find a way to learn, regardless of whether they conform or not.
