Scientists from the University of California San Diego have developed a method to make ceramics tougher and more resistant to cracking. By using a mix of metal atoms with a higher number of valence electrons, they have created high-entropy carbides that can withstand higher levels of force and stress. These ceramics exhibit a more ductile behavior, similar to metals, and can deform and stretch instead of breaking easily. The discovery opens up possibilities for applications in aerospace components, protective coatings, and extreme environments. Scaling up production for commercial use is the next challenge.
