Gigantic turbine move to Fort St. Vrain triggers I-25 closure in Northern Colorado
A 1.25-million-pound turbine is being moved from Loveland to Xcel Energy’s Fort St. Vrain Generating Station by Mammoet; the 300-foot-long, 19-foot-tall load travels about 5 mph and will require a midday closure of I-25 at the Longmont exit (11:45 a.m.–1 p.m.) as it crosses the interstate, with seven CDOT troopers escorting. The route runs from Loveland to Platteville via US-287 and CO-66, then across I-25 to CO-66, with multiple Weld County roads involved. This move supports Xcel’s Clean Energy Plan, and three additional transports are planned in coming weeks.
