Study reveals Seagate and Hitachi HDDs have highest failure rates.

A recent study by Secure Data Recovery tested 2,007 broken HDDs from six manufacturers to determine their reliability and lifespan. Toshiba came out on top with an average lifespan of 34,799 hours, while Hitachi finished last with only 18,632 hours. Seagate and Western Digital HDDs clocked in around the mid-20,000-hour ranges, while Samsung scored just over 19,000 hours, barely better than Hitachi. The study also found that higher pending sector counts are an indicator that the device is headed for failure.
