Scientists have created a detailed map of the spatial interactions between viral and host cell proteins within human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) particles, shedding light on the strategies used by herpes viruses to evade the immune system and replicate efficiently. The study revealed that certain host cell proteins are recruited by viral proteins, such as UL32, to aid in viral replication. This innovative technique of cross-linking mass spectrometry has provided valuable insights into the complex life cycle of HCMV and may contribute to the development of antiviral drugs against HCMV.
