
George Winston, Renowned Pianist of Soothing Melodies, Passes Away at 73
George Winston, the pianist known for his warm, melodic and pastoral solo piano music, has died at the age of 73 after a long battle with cancer. Winston's successful recordings made him one of the first stars of new age music, selling over 15 million albums worldwide. He won a Grammy Award for best new age album in 1994. Winston also played harmonica and guitar, and founded Dancing Cat Records, which became a key forum for Hawaiian slack-key guitarists. He is survived by his sister, Nancy Winston Kahumoku, and a niece and nephew.
