The Biden administration has returned a Guatemalan man, improperly deported to Mexico, back to the U.S. following a federal judge's order, to ensure he receives due process and can pursue asylum, highlighting ongoing tensions over immigration enforcement and judicial rulings.
Virgilio Aguilar Mendez, a Guatemalan illegal immigrant accused of killing a police officer in Florida, has been released from ICE custody after charges against him were dropped. The incident occurred during a scuffle with law enforcement officers, resulting in the death of Sgt. Michael Kunovich. Aguilar Mendez's lawyer shared a TikTok video of his release, citing expert testimony on his inability to comprehend English and concerns about his intellectual capacity as reasons for the dismissal of charges. Sheriff Hardwick described Kunovich as a valued member of the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office.
