"GRPS Implements Backpack Ban for School Safety"
Grand Rapids Public Schools has banned backpacks district-wide after a loaded gun was found in the backpack of a third-grade student at Stocking Elementary School. This is the fourth gun seized from a GRPS student during the 2022-23 school year. The district urges parents to keep firearms in a secure location and out of children's reach and encourages children to speak up when something feels off. The backpack ban takes immediate effect and will be enforced until further notice. Criminal charges are expected to be filed in both incidents.
