"HDMI Forum Rejects AMD's Open-Source HDMI 2.1 Driver Support Proposal"

AMD's efforts to implement HDMI 2.1+ functionality in their open-source Linux graphics driver have failed, as the HDMI Forum has rejected their request for open-source driver support, leading to limitations such as the inability to provide 4K@120Hz and 5K@240Hz capabilities on the AMD Linux driver. This decision highlights the challenges faced by open-source initiatives in accessing now-private HDMI specifications, despite efforts by AMD and the X.Org Foundation to find a solution.

AMD's Anti-Lag+ Driver Update Causes Counter-Strike 2 Bans

AMD has removed its latest graphics driver version after Valve warned that players using AMD's Anti-Lag+ technology would be banned under Valve's anti-cheat rules in games like Counter-Strike 2. Anti-Lag+ alters the game code itself, triggering bans and crashes in various competitive online games. Nvidia users have not reported similar issues with their Reflex system. Valve has acknowledged the unintentional cheating and will reverse bans once AMD releases an update.

Open-source graphics driver development gains momentum with new hires and expanded support.

Progress on NVK, the open source NVIDIA Vulkan driver developed by the community, is going well with support for Maxwell and Kepler GPUs, geometry, tessellation, and transform feedback, and more extensions. However, it's not yet passing the conformance tests and there's no timeline for when it will be upstreamed into Mesa directly. Work is ongoing on a new back-end compiler for NVIDIA hardware, and performance issues still need to be addressed.

"Intel Arc Graphics Driver Improves Gaming Performance on Linux"

Intel's latest Mesa 23.2 code has a significant performance optimization for its graphics driver stack, which helps Intel Arc Graphics DG2/Alchemist and upcoming Meteor Lake graphics. The change enables L3 partial write merging for compressible surfaces and other suitable cases for DG2 and Meteor Lake, leading to measurable speed-ups for Intel's Arc Graphics discrete GPUs and narrowing the gap between the Windows and Linux graphics driver performance. The change is currently in the Mesa 23.2-devel Git code and will be out as stable around late August or September.
