Ukraine's Counteroffensive Hindered by Mud and Lack of Equipment
Springtime mud is causing mobility issues for both Ukrainian and Russian troops in eastern Ukraine, with German-made howitzers being particularly vulnerable due to their sensitivity to dirt and moisture. The Panzerhaubitze 2000 self-propelled howitzers require soldiers to wear slippers or booties when entering the vehicles to avoid tracking in mud, and even come with a vacuum cleaner. Despite the challenges, Ukrainian forces operating the howitzers have reportedly seen some successes against Russian tank and infantry units. Mud has also impacted operations for both sides in the conflict, but the surface conditions are expected to improve as the weather gets better.
