The Biden administration has launched a national database to track serious misconduct by federal law enforcement officers, aiming to hold them accountable and prevent bad hiring decisions. The National Law Enforcement Accountability Database (NLEAD) will monitor eight areas of behavior classified as "serious misconduct," including excessive force, false reports, bias or discrimination, and sexual misconduct. While the database won't be accessible to the public, authorized users within federal law enforcement agencies will have access. The Justice Department plans to expand the database to include other federal law enforcement in the future and will publish an annual report with aggregated data to maintain officer anonymity. The initiative is part of broader efforts to address law enforcement misconduct following the murder of George Floyd and calls for police reform.
