Gender-nonconforming actors make Tony Awards history with snubs and surprises.
J. Harrison Ghee and Alex Newell have become the first gender-nonconforming actors to be nominated for Tony Awards. Ghee was nominated for best actor in a leading role in a musical, and Newell was nominated for best actor in a featured role in a musical. Both performers have discussed why they decided to be considered in the actor categories over the actress categories for the Tonys. Trans and nonbinary performers have increasingly protested binary, gendered award categories.
