Five Artful Corners of Los Angeles

A Los Angeles Times critic argues that LA is rich in art beyond its film image, listing five favorites: the bronze Eros undercover by the ocean at the Getty Villa; the Fowler Museum’s celebrated textiles from Indonesia and beyond; the Huntington’s serene bonsai gardens; Kent Twitchell’s Ed Ruscha mural and LA’s vibrant mural culture; and Hollywood Forever cemetery, a living pantheon that hosts screenings and star tributes, showing how memory, landscape and art converge in the city, with a Google map guiding readers to more sites.

The Pandemic Unveils a Hidden Delaware Garden.

The Crowninshield Garden, created by a DuPont heiress in the 1920s, disappeared over the decades until Paul Orpello was hired to reclaim it in 2018. However, the COVID-19 pandemic hit before he could start the project, and during the shutdown, azaleas, tulips, and peonies dormant for over 50 years suddenly started to bloom. Orpello wants to fully restore the garden to how Crowninshield had it, with pools she set in the factory-building footprints and a terrace with a mosaic of a Pegasus recently discovered under the dirt. The estimated cost of the restoration is $30 million, but Orpello is focused on the message of resiliency.

"Stunning Design: House PF by AE Arquitectos"

House PF, designed by AE Arquitectos, is a private residence constructed above a basement of concrete walls, with simple volumes and materiality that contrast beautifully with the surrounding trees and gardens. The central patio connects all spaces, and vegetation plays a central role in the project, with every space accompanied by a garden. The warm wood and cold concrete colors are present throughout the house, and the main room opens up to the central space, where the garden connects exterior spaces with the interior ones. The upper floor includes bedrooms protected from sunlight by a flared wooden sash, and the basement features a wine cellar, terrace, and space for relaxation and meditation.
