In the live-action version of The Little Mermaid, Scuttle has been turned into a Gannet instead of a seagull. Director Rob Marshall explained that this change was made to better fit the story and raise the stakes for Ariel's first trip to the surface. Gannets are diving birds that can provide information to Ariel underwater, unlike seagulls.
