Greek PM Offers Free Holidays to Tourists Fleeing Rhodes Wildfires
Greece has announced that it will offer a week-long free stay on the island of Rhodes in 2024 to tourists whose vacations were cut short by the wildfires that recently ravaged the island. The wildfires, which broke out on July 18, caused significant damage to homes and hotels and forced thousands of people to evacuate. Tourism is a vital sector for Greece's economy, and Rhodes is a popular holiday destination. Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis stated that the government wants to ensure that visitors return to the island and enjoy its natural beauty, offering them a chance to come back for a free holiday next spring or fall. Mitsotakis also acknowledged that climate change has contributed to the increased intensity of wildfires in the Mediterranean.
