Iconic 'SNL' and Broadway costume designer Franne Lee passes away at 81
Franne Lee, the Tony Award-winning costume designer known for her work on Saturday Night Live and Broadway productions like Sweeney Todd, has passed away at the age of 81. Lee's creativity and resourcefulness were evident in her designs for SNL, where she worked with a small budget and often relied on thrift store finds. She helped create iconic characters such as the Coneheads and Roseanne Roseannadanna. Lee collaborated closely with set designer Eugene Lee, her life partner, and together they won Tony Awards for their work on Candide and Sweeney Todd. Lee's daughter recalls her love for creating costumes out of "found pieces" and her constant search for creative solutions, even with bigger budgets.
