Judge Dismisses Romeo and Juliet Child Abuse Lawsuit

A California judge is set to throw out a child abuse lawsuit filed by the two lead actors from the 1968 adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, Olivia Hussey and Leonard Whiting, who accused Paramount of sexual exploitation over a nude scene they allege was insisted upon after being told it wouldn’t take place. The judge rejected the claim that the film amounted to images of child abuse and stated that the plaintiffs had not correctly followed the rules of the California law that allowed for a temporary suspension of statute of limitations over abuse claims.

Judge to dismiss $100M 'Romeo & Juliet' sex abuse lawsuit.

A $100 million lawsuit against Paramount Pictures by Olivia Hussey and Leonard Whiting, stars of Franco Zeffirelli's 1968 adaptation of Romeo & Juliet, alleging sexual abuse and negligence, has been dismissed by a Los Angeles judge citing the First Amendment. The judge also rejected the claim that the film contained child pornography. Hussey and Whiting were 15 and 16 years old when the film was shot, and they alleged that Zeffirelli violated their consent by filming them nude without their knowledge. The duo sought $100 million in damages, estimating that the film has made over $500 million since its release.

Nézet-Séguin leads triumphant return of "La Bohème" at the Met.

Yannick Nézet-Séguin, the Metropolitan Opera's music director, conducted a revival of Franco Zeffirelli's production of Puccini's "La Bohème" for the first time. The orchestra and chorus were adroit, and the bass-baritone Christian Van Horn was the best in the cast. Nézet-Séguin's approach to the opera is characterized by close juxtapositions of tempos, resulting in an atmospheric, dreamy effect. The production runs through June 9th at the Metropolitan Opera.
