Citizens Insurance policyholders in Florida are receiving notices about a potential "hurricane tax" that could be imposed if the state insurer of last resort runs out of funds. The tax, which could be as high as 45% of premiums, has sparked outrage among policyholders who argue that they are already paying high premiums. Citizens Insurance has been taking on policies at a record rate and its exposure to large claims has raised concerns. The company is offering take-out offers to lower its policies by moving them to private insurers, but many customers find the offers expensive. In extreme financial situations, the assessment program could also result in surcharges on all private insurance policies in the state.
Three adults and a dog from Florida died after falling into a cistern in a cornfield in Bastrop County, Texas. Law enforcement believes that toxic gases in the cistern caused their deaths. The victims were part of a group hunting hogs when a dog fell into the hole, prompting one of the hunters to jump in after it. Two other hunters followed, but they were unable to stay afloat due to the hydrogen sulfide gas in the cistern. Recovery efforts were hampered by the gas and stagnant water, but the victims were eventually extracted. The cistern did not have a cover, which is required by law for openings of a certain size.
Walt Disney World is offering a special ticket deal for Florida residents this summer, starting at $58 per day for a four-day ticket or $70 per day for a three-day ticket. The ticket requires advance theme park reservations and is valid from May 16 to Sept. 29, 2023, with blockout dates. The park will also offer a four-day "Magic Ticket" starting May 23, which costs $99 per day and includes one day of admission to each of the four theme parks.
Disney World has resumed sales of all four annual passes for the first time since November 2021, but most people will only be eligible to buy the top tier Incredi-Pass, which costs $1,399 and has no blockout dates. The other passes have varying prices and blockout dates, and are restricted to Florida residents or Disney Vacation Club members. Annual pass holders get discounts on dining, merchandise, resort stays, and activities, among other perks. The cost per day drops as more days are added to tickets, making it worth it for guests who plan to visit multiple times throughout the year.
Walt Disney World will resume selling annual passes starting April 20, with a limited quantity available. Only Florida residents can purchase new passes, while out-of-state park guests can only renew their passes. New benefits have been added to the passholder program, including access to select Disney PhotoPass services and exemption from requiring a park reservation after 2 p.m. on most days. The passes will be available in four tiers, with prices ranging from $399 to $1,399.
