Florida High School Penalized for Transgender Student on Girls Volleyball Team
Monarch High School in Florida has been fined $16,500 and placed on probation by the Florida High School Athletic Association for allowing a transgender athlete to play on the girls' volleyball team. The school principal and athletic director are required to attend rules seminars, and further violations could result in increased punishment. The student in question, a 10th grader, was removed from the team after an anonymous tip. The incident sparked a student walkout in support of the transgender student. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed a law in 2021 prohibiting transgender athletes from competing in female sports. The Human Rights Campaign criticized the ruling, stating that it is rooted in anti-transgender bias.
