"Mexican President Warns of High Risk Operations at Capital Airport"

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador defended his decision to move cargo from Mexico City's principal airport, stating that operations at the airport are "very risky" due to operating at 150% of its capacity. The government-mandated flight cuts, set to take effect in January, have been criticized by industry groups and will also impact the usage tax collected from passengers. The move comes after the president scrapped the construction of an unfinished airport upon his election. Ratings agency Fitch recently revised the outlook of the trust managing the airport's outstanding bonds to negative, citing concerns about maintenance and passenger congestion.

Delta joins other airlines in reducing late-summer flights to NYC.

Delta Air Lines will cut just over 6% of its flights to and from New York City-area airports in August, following American Airlines and United Airlines in trimming their summer schedules in response to a shortage of air traffic controllers in New York. The biggest cuts were to flights between Delta's two primary New York hubs, LaGuardia Airport (LGA) and John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), and Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA). The FAA said last month that airlines could choose to temporarily return up to 10% of their slots between May 15 and Sept. 15.

Delta Airlines Continues to Suspend Services Across US Airports Due to Personnel Shortages.

Delta Air Lines will exit two regional markets, La Crosse, Wisconsin, and State College, Pennsylvania, effective June 5, bringing the total number of cities it has dropped during the pandemic to 17. The airline has not provided a timeline for when it might re-enter these markets. Delta is no longer selling any flights to either city beyond June 5. The pandemic and its effects have caused many major airlines to experience staffing shortages, particularly in their pilot ranks, leading to a major pullback in regional connectivity.

JetBlue to reduce New York flights this summer, says CEO.

JetBlue CEO Robin Hayes warned that the airline will have to cut flights in and out of the New York area this summer due to a significant shortage of air traffic controllers. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) warned that if the industry doesn’t cut flights in the area, delays will be 45% worse compared to last summer. The majority of JetBlue's flights, nearly 60%, are in and out of the New York area every day. The airline has invested tens of millions of dollars to ramp up hiring, but the staffing at the air traffic control center that handles all inbound, outbound and through traffic across New York airspace is only at 54% of what is needed.
