Firaxis Games hit by layoffs following recent disappointments.

Firaxis Games, the studio behind XCOM and Civilization, has undergone a round of layoffs affecting around 30 employees as part of Take-Two's "cost reduction program." Publisher 2K Games confirmed the news and said the job cuts were due to a "sharpening of focus, enhancements of efficiencies, and an alignment of our talent against our highest priorities." Despite the underperformance of their latest release, Marvel's Midnight Suns, Firaxis remains focused on developing critically acclaimed video games, including the next entry in the Civilization series.

XCOM Designer Jake Solomon Shifts Focus to Life Sim for Next Game

Jake Solomon, the designer behind XCOM, has left Firaxis Games after 23 years to start his own studio. Solomon wants to try something different from the turn-based genre where he made his name and is interested in creating a life simulator or simulation-style game. This could potentially put him in competition with The Sims 5, which is already facing competition from other life simulator games. Solomon's new studio doesn't have a name yet and he is still looking for funding.
