Ferry Sinks Off Basilan, 18 Dead as Hundreds Rescued in Philippines
A steel-hulled ferry with more than 350 people on board sank near Baluk-Baluk Island, Basilan, in the southern Philippines after developing problems. At least 18 people were killed and about 316 were rescued, with roughly two dozen still missing as coast guard and navy crews search using vessels, a plane, and helicopters. Officials say there was no immediate sign of overloading, and an investigation will determine the cause.
