Iran Scrambles for Influence in Syria After Assad's Fall
Iranian proxy groups in Syria, the Fatemiyoun and Zainebiyoun Brigades, have largely abandoned their positions amid a recent anti-Assad rebel offensive. These groups, composed of Afghan and Pakistani Shiites, played significant roles in the Syrian civil war, supporting the Assad regime against ISIS. Despite their sudden retreat, experts believe Iran will maintain these forces due to ongoing regional conflicts involving other allies like Hezbollah and Hamas. The current whereabouts of these fighters are uncertain, with some possibly relocated to Iran or neighboring countries.
