A federal court has granted special counsel Jack Smith's request for an expedited appeal in the election interference case against former President Donald Trump. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit has set deadlines for briefs from both prosecutors and the defense regarding Trump's argument for dismissal based on presidential immunity. The appeal, which could push back the trial's start date, will be considered by a three-judge panel. Trump's lawyers oppose the expedited process, claiming it would impair their ability to present arguments. The Supreme Court has also been asked to intervene on the immunity claim. Trump faces four counts of criminal conduct related to conspiracy to defraud the U.S. after the 2020 election.
