Somali Pirates Escalate Attacks with Tanker Seizure
EU naval forces rescued 24 crew members from the Maltese-flagged oil tanker Hellas Aphrodite, which was seized by Somali pirates off the coast of Somalia. The crew remained safe inside a citadel during the attack, and the pirates abandoned the ship after a show of force by the EU forces. Despite a decline in piracy over the past decade, recent attacks and regional tensions have led to a resurgence of piracy activities in the area.
